EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
